BLW Breakfast Ideas With Gee Gardner | Guest Post

Gee and her little girlHi! My name is Gee, and I blog over at www.geegardner.co.uk, I live in the good old Cotswolds with my fiance Ben and our two girls, Eloise age 8 and Lily age 2.

It’s been nearly 8 years since I very first stepped into the exciting yet overwhelming world of weaning and I think the journey is a big one whichever feeding style you take. With Eloise, I went with BLW but as Lily had a then, undiagnosed lip and tongue tie, I was always just that little bit more worried when it came to weaning her. She would choke on just water or milk so the thought of letting her dive right in like Eloise did scared me a bit so when she hit 6 months we started with purees and whatever we were having but mashed or cut up very small for her and quickly introduced some finger foods too although it was mostly cut very small or mashed things, atleast to begin with. I guess you could say we did a mix of TW and BLW if you like.

Whatever you choose to do, things can get very samey very quickly and it’s important to introduce a lot of new flavours consistently to broaden your little ones pallette and (hopefully) avoid fussiness later on. Here are a little collect of both my girls’ favourite breakfasts:

Pancakes

You can cook these into little finger shapes as opposed to your regular round shape to make them easier for baby to grasp. You can add all kinds of things to pancakes super easily, some  of our favourites are:

  • Blueberry
  • Banana
  • Cherry and almond
  • Almond butter and chocolate chips
  • Strawberry and cream cheese
  • Fruity Yogurt

This is great for a quick, easy breakfast or for those mornings when you just can’t be bothered! It’s simple, it’s healthy and a winner with most kids. We prefer to use plain greek yoghurt which I then chop up whatever fruit we have to hand and then pop it all in a bowl, that’s it! Done!

Overnight Oats

Another easy, nutricious breakfast! For this all I do is mix some plain porridge oats with some yoghurt and layer in some fruit inbetween. You can use flavoured yoghurt too like I did in my Tropical Overnight Oats or even add chia seeds or peanut butter. You can create so many favlour combonations making this an incredibly versatile breaskfast!

Smoothie Bowls

These are a great way to use up any baby fruit pouches you may have or make them BLW friendly and of course you can use fresh or frozen fruit. All I do it chuck whatever fruity combo I like into a blender along with a banana to thicken it up a bit so it’s not just juice then pour it into a bowl! I tend to decorate the top a bit with slaced fruit, a drizzle of almond butter or some dessicated coconut, just to be fancy.

Cereal

Good old cereal never does let me down although sugar is a big deal when it comes to super little ones. Mini Shreadded Wheat soaked slightly in warm milk are a good shout, the bitesize oens are a perfect size for little hands to grab and probably squish everwhere but what’s a little mess between friends.

Other good ones to go for that are lower in sugar are:

  • Special K
  • Wheetabix
  • Cheerios
  • Rice Crispies
  • Cornflakes

Although the odd bowl of Coco Pops never did hurt anyone!

Fruity Breakfast Crumble

bowl of fruit crumble with raspberries and iceing sugar

This is basically a healthy version of a fruit crumble. Instead of your regular crumble topping, I use porridge and the kids love it. To make it all I do is:

  1. Put a small handful of porridge oats in a microwave proof bowl with a splash of milk (I don’t measure but enough to cover the oats, more if you want it sloppier for younger babies) and microwave until it starts to bubble (about 20 seconds depending on how much you make).
  2. Leave to cool whilst you do the next step.
  3. Pop the raspberries (a small handful will be more than enough) in the ramekin and add a very small splash of water, a tea spoon will be more than enough.
  4. Microwave for about 15-20 seconds or until the fruit has softened
  5. Spoon the porridge on top of the fruit and top with some oats and a sprinkling of demerara sugar.

Toast Fingers

Toast is the God of all easy breakfasts, I bloody love toast. You can top it with anything, have different breads, the options are endless. One of my particular favourites for Lily is seeded wholemeal bread with almond butter but you can do things like:

  • Mashed banana and honey (if your little one is over 1)
  • Peanut butter and jam
  • Nutella
  • Cream cheese and strawberries
  • French toast
  • Banana and cinnamon

There are endless different toppings!
