White noise has been our saviour when it comes to a decent nights sleep. When Molly was a newborn she suffered badly with colic. Really badly. I used to dread night time. Molly would wake every hour or just be awake all night, completely unconscionable. I remembered that whilst I was pregnant, my friend Katie used a white noise app on her phone for her daughter. We couldn’t believe how well it worked and how quickly Katie’s little one fell asleep! Liam and I tried having white noise play on our phones throughout the night but it wasn’t great. It would only play for a certain amount of time and then switch off. Thus resulting in a unhappy & tired newborn and an equally unhappy & tired Mama!
One day I was browsing Facebook and saw an add for myHummy. I did my research and took to Facebook to ask other mum’s for their advice re white noise machines/toys. It was clear that myHummy was a firm favorite as everything I heard was positive.
Who are myHummy?
myHummy are the brand behind some of the cutest and cleverest sleep aids to hit the market in recent years. Created by a mama desperate to help her little one sleep, the myHummy range combines the use of white noise with cute designs that’s guaranteed to appeal to both parents and little ones alike. With three ranges; the sleepyheads, the snoozys and the teddy bears, priced from £39 up to £59, there’s something to suit every child, and every pocket!
How does white noise help with sleep?
As myHummy remind us, babies really aren’t used to silence. Contrary to what you might think, the outside world can actually be quite quiet for babies, especially at night time. After spending months in the enclosed, safe environment of the womb, they can become stressed and over-tired with the unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells. These factors often leads to uncontrollable crying and colic. When your little one was in your womb at 15 weeks of gestation, your baby was starting to hear. The sounds they heard were muffled by amniotic fluid, but you can use noises that mimic that womb sound to soothe and comfort your baby at nap time, AKA white noise.
Technically, white noise is a sound that contains every frequency within the range of human hearing in equal amounts. White noise sounds similar to TV or radio ‘static’, but constant background noises such as a washing machine, vacuum cleaner, fan or running water also help promote sleep in the same way.
One study found that white noise helped 80 percent of babies fall asleep within five minutes. FIVE MINUTES!! So it’s really worth trying – with older babies and toddlers as well as newborns. Actually, I won’t lie, We slept better too!
The Sleepy head.
I think Molly was 4 weeks old. It was 9am and I was already on my 4th cup of coffee of the day, so decided to purchase the Sleepyhead and give it ago. We needed something to help our little bug sleep, and at this point, I was willing to try anything!
It took us a while to decide, but we went for the Sleepy head. Purely because it has a strap on it, so you can attach it to the crib/cot/car seat/ your hand as you try to frantically bounce your baby to sleep. When we received our Sleepy head I couldn’t have been more excited to try it out. .
As soon as we started to use it, Molly started to settle a lot easier and even sleep through the night at just 5 weeks old. She has been sleeping through the night ever since, even when teething ( she has 8 teeth now!) struck . I loved this product so much it featured in my 0-3 month favorites. It was quite possibly the best thing ever and I (still to this day) am constantly recommending myHummy to my mummy friends who ask how I got Molly to sleep through at 5 weeks old. It’s the best invention ever!
Or so I thought, Until I met Fleur!
We were extremely excited to be offered the opportunity to review one of the new range by myHummy. They kindly sent us Fleur, who we chose for Molly. We chose a teddy because Molly is at the age now where she snuggles her soft toys. Fleur is from the teddy bear range and is, in my opinion the prettiest one. She has beautiful mint coloured floral, almost Liberty like pattern on her arms, ears and a patch on her leg. She has a cute checker skirt and matching bow for full on cuteness. Molly got all kicky feet when I gave her Fleur and she hasn’t left her side since.
Feautures
White noise variations:
It has Five types of white noise which resemble: amniotic fluid with heartbeat, rainfall, sea waves, hairdryer, vacuum cleaner. The one we used for molly when she was a newborn was the heartbeat sound. It was the only one that really soothed her. Now we like to switch between the heartbeat and the hairdryer!
Sensor:
My favourite feature on the myHummy products is the sleep sensor. This was an amazing feature in the early days when Molly would wake for no reason other than some form of comfort. I would make sure the sleepy head was set to continuous, then as soon as she started to stir the myHummy would kick back in, resulting in Molly self soothing herself back to sleep without me having to move a muscle!
Bluetooth Controls:
With the original features ( Sleep head) You can change sounds, change the volume and change between functions (on, continual or off) by pressing the ‘Humming heart’ in different ways. It took us a while to get to grips with how many clicks did what, but you soon get the hang of it!
With the newer models (Fleur) however, you can download an app on your phone and sync it up to your ‘humming heart’ via Bluetooth. This means you have the ability to control the sounds, change the volume, change between functions and switch the sleep sensors on and off from the comfort of your bed. Your bed!
The newer models also have Alarm Mode, which when turned on, sends notifications to a phone when baby starts to whimper or cry (within Bluetooth range). Perfect for when you need to change the sounds, volume or time duration and don’t want to risk waking a sleeping baby. Never wake a sleeping baby!
Machine washable:
Another wonderful and probably the most important feature is that all myHummy toys are machine washable! So if your tiny human happens to either drop their myHummy, or have some form of bodily fluid mishap you just take out the ‘humming heart’ (oh my) and pop the toy onto a 40 degree wash. Pop the ‘humming heart’ back in once dry and you’re ready to go again!
Does it work for Molly?
We already knew that the myHummy works a treat on Molly, I was however a little worried about transitioning her from the Sleep head to Fleur. I was worried she has become attached and that it was a comforter to her. Turns out I was totally wrong and she went to sleep like a gem! Sleepy head has now been washed, dried and popped into the loft, all ready for when we decide to have another baby.
Welcome to the family Fleur!
