Books books and more books! We love books in our house. Molly has hundreds of them at just 9 months old and as the seasons change and the holidays approach, I still find myself wanting to buy more. I need help. Here is a little list of our favorite Halloween books that we have so far. No doubt the collection will grow even more over time, I have a list as long as my arm of the ones I want to get!
Room on the broom, Julia Donaldson, Axel Scheffler
We love Room on the broom. By we, I probably mean myself more than Molly! It’s a rhyming story that is fun to read aloud. It’s the perfect Halloween book for young children. Yes, it features a witch but a kind witch. She keeps losing things and various animals help her find them again. It’s by the same people who wrote The Gruffalo – No wonder I love it so much! Its a fun, heart warming story with fab illustrations.
Meg and Mog, Helen Nicoll & Jan Pienkowski
I remember Meg and Mog books from when I was a kid and I am loving the fact I get to read it to Molly now. Meg (a witch) and Mog (her cat) are going to a party up in the sky but Meg’s friends don’t know what they have let themselves in for when their spell turns them into mice.
We love the simplicity but bright illustrations and the large lettering . These books have really stood the test of time. We also now own the DVD of Meg and Mog. Molly LOVES it. She will sit there and watch all the episodes in one go. It is exactly the same format as the book, full of bold bright colours. bloody brilliant!!
That’s not my Witch, Fiona Watt and Rachel Wells
You may or may not know, we have an obsession for Usbourns ‘Thats not my..’ collection. We have been collecting them since before Molly was born, and now have quite a few. There are still LOADS that we need to complete our collection because there are just that many!
That’s not my Witch is the perfect introduction to Halloween for babies. The illustrations are bright and attractive with lots of things to point out and name. Each page ( like all the other books ) features a touchy-feely patch too – the Witch’s boots are shiny and her hat is fuzzy. As ever the characters are smiley and hugely appealing.
We love these books because they are tactile with the strokable patches. The patches are not just an added treat but a means to help develop sensory awareness alongside the language skills being learned. LOVE THEM!
Halloween Peek-a-Boo!, Make Believe Ideas, Ltd
We came across this book at a garden center. Molly started laughing as soon as she saw her own reflection – so we knew we had to get it! This book has such cute rhyming. It invites readers to copy the silly faces of the trick-or-treaters throughout the book whilst enjoying making the faces and watching themselves in the fold out mirror. Molly just points at herself every time she sees her reflection – Its a working progress!
