Today is set to be one of the hottest days of the year so far for the UK. With temperatures reaching a possible 32 degrees, it’s going to be a scorcher! With a lot of the tiny ones off school now, finding things to do in the heat without spending a fortune is a must. Why not kick off summer with some pretty floral ice water play. You could even add some to a sneaky G&T!
Water Play Set Up..
This has to be the most simple water play activity I have ever done, but also one of the most fun! Grab a bunch of natural elements from your garden. Leaves, flower petals, dandelions, daisy’s anything. If you have a sad looking bunch of flowers in your house, grab those too, leaves and all!
Next, you want to arrange them into ice cube trays. I’ve got large cubed ones from when I made hot chocolate sticks at Christmas. I have also used plastic containers for a larger ice cube that will last longer – thus keeping the kids occupied longer so you can enjoy that extra few minutes, downing that G&T! Fill the trays and containers with water, making sure your flowers etc are fully submerged. Another tip is to be worried about over filling with flowers. I found that the more you stuffed in there, the prettier they looked! Pop them in the freezer and in a few hours you’ve pretty ice cubes! If you wanted to make some for your drinks, use some herbs like mint or lemon balm. You can also use fruit!
Let them play..
Molly loves this activity. I lay them all out on her tuff spot and she plays for ages. Picking up the ice cubes and shouting that they are cold, scooping and sorting them. She then gets all excited when she manages to free a flower. Too cute. I already have a bunch of floral ice cubes int he freezer for when she wakes from her nap. So be sure to keep a eye over on my Instagram as I’ll post it on my stories!
This is a great way to get a second use from flowers that are looking a bit sad, and when you’re done you can pop them onto the compost heap! You also don’t have to use flowers, I have seen people freeze different toys which i thinks an awesome idea! I will say, please keep an eye on your little ones during this activity, just in case they try to put anything in their mouth. If you have a small baby, you can explore the ice cubes together, or pop them into a clear sensory bottle for them to explore and shake about like crazy!
Have you tried this activity before? Let me know what things you froze!
